Abstract This paper will discuss the benefits and drawbacks from the point of view that globalization made in the developing countries in the three important fields such as economic and trade processes, education and health systems and culture effects. It is consists of four paragraphs. In paragraph one, the benefits and detriment of globalization in the economic and trade processes field will be discussed. Then, in paragraph two, the impact of globalization on education and health systems in both sides will be shown. However, De Cuyper and Isaksson (2017) stated that a cloud of doubt remains about the future of the men involved in this business. This is mainly because of the fact that the ships do not have many duties once it has reached the port. In this regard, contractual employment on a part-time basis needs to be provided to the employees. The research proposal investigates the employability and duties of the people involved in the shipping industry. Special emphasis is put on the duties carried on by the employees after the porting of the ship. The ways by which these people are managed by the ship managers are also highlighted in this research proposal. The satisfaction level of the employees, as well as the family members, is highlighted in the research. Choice of research area The reason behind the choice of this research area is the fact that I have personal experience while maintaining contact with seafarers. I have travelled quite a lot in these vessels and have scrutinised the working of the people in these vessels in a minute manner. It has been observed that the working of the vessels is different from the things that are usually portrayed. The ports have facilities for unloading the shipments as well as porting the ship in a convenient manner. However, the facilities for the employees are absent and the people are mistreated once the ship has been ported on shore. The ships are designed in such a manner that provides the necessities required for survival of the employees in the ship (Dixon, 2013). Certain things exist that need to be included in order to maintain the satisfaction of the employees. The differences in the level of things that exist among the seafarer include the type of food that is served and the ways by which relation is maintained among one another. The reason for the choice of this topic is due to my close association with the seafarers. The research will highlight the importance of improving the conditions of the employees working in the vessel. Opportunities exist for the officers to carry the families on board the vessels, however, due to lack of space such a luxury is not used effectively. Hence, a proper research is conducted in order to identify the flaws and suggest improvement. Methodology Gaythwaite (2016) stated that in order to conduct a successful research it is necessary for a researcher to select a suitable methodology. The choice of methodology determines the level of conducting the research. In order to conduct the research in a successful manner, the researcher has chosen qualitative study. A qualitative study is used to collect information that examines the reason behind the occurrence of a certain topic. It provides trends about the thoughts and opinions that people have about a particular topic and uses it to make a suitable hypothesis of the research (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault, 2015). For the purpose of this study, the choice of qualitative research is made in order to provide a scientific description of the people along with the culture and the reason for selecting such a profession. Personal narratives and experience are also provided in the research in order to make it accurate and authentic. In this regard, the approach followed in conducting the rese arch can be stated: Formulating research questions Identifying the problem statement Conducting a literature review Identifying a suitable methodology Outlining the process of conducting the methods Designing the questionnaire Identifying sample population Conducting interview Making a thorough observation Providing personal narratives Conducting an analysis Drawing a conclusion Generating the results Based on this system, the research can be conducted in a successful manner. The importance of the research is also stated in order to provide a clear understanding of the topic. Importance of the research The reason behind conducting an analysis based on the topic of ship traffic management is that such a topic has been ignored in the managerial books. Mowforth and Munt (2015) stated that the researchers that have been conducted on the topic have failed to shed light on the sufferings of the employees. Most of the people working as seafarers tend to sign a contract for a period of six months and remain on the vessel during the length of that time. The lives of the people become connected with the sea and the ports thereby making it difficult for the employees to accommodate to employment away from the sea. Myers, Montgomery and Anderson-Cook (2016) stated that certain ports have club facilities for the employees that help them in relaxation. The ports do not have to provide a healthy treat for the employees but can provide a minimum resting place for the people (Pallis and Theotokas, 2017). The focal point is the conditions of the employees and the ways by which they need to adjust life after the completion of a travel. In my opinion the playwright uses different types of language; and also how the play has different types high and low classes for example Miss Julie is a high class person because she is the Lordships daughter and she presented by this way her language:Not to mention conceit. Thats it, Joseph this shows that Miss Julies language is very complicated as she is the Lordships daughter, in the play Miss Julie doesnt use simple sentences so much, so she shows she is a higher class than everyone in the play and she makes very sophisticated references. However, sometimes in the play Jean uses complicated language as well this shown that Jean has an ambition to be a high status person even though Jean is a servant, a lower class The mistress of everything, the chief ornament of the house. On the other hand Kristen the cook uses a lot of simple language, Kristen is a character that follows the orders and shows respect thats why Strindberg in the play always has her talking in simple language Shes always been wild. But worse these last few days, since her engagement finished This play features many of metaphors, and is a huge factor in this play as well, for example when Kristen and Jean was talking about Miss Julies dog called Diana. Ill, ha! Shes been at it with that mongrel at the lodge, and now shes Miss Julie wont have it. Diana is going out with this mongrel with Diana high status going out with the gatekeepers mongrel low status is a symbol of Miss Julie and Jean relationship by Diana representing Miss Julie and the gatekeepers mongrel representing Jean this is an example of Strindberg using metaphors in the play. Furthermore there is symbolism where Jean and Miss Julie told each other their dreams Im on top of a high pillar, Ive climbed all the way up and I cant get down again Strindberg did this to show that Miss Julie is a high status person but as well want to get down from the high class, however Strindberg wrote Jeans dream differently The nest with the golden egg, I want to rob it. I climb and I climb trunks so thick, slippery, Strindberg is showing that Jean want to be a high class person and shows ambition but he cant reach to the top. This play has different natural and unnatural language, in my opinion I think Strindberg did this for the audience to be enthusiastic and bring energy to the play. But for most plays usually uses very natural language Shes wild again tonight. Miss Julie. Wild showing the play is creating really fast tempo pace because the speech gets to the point. However sometimes the play gets unnatural with pauses and breaks between the sentences There was someone there: a pink frock, white stockings, it was you. Poetic language is also used, where Miss Julie and Jean having a monologue See, your Ladyship, a dog can stretch out on your Ladyships shoulder, a horse can feel your hand stroking him, but a servant in my opinion Strindberg uses poetic language to make it kind of more romantic poem. Questions are use in the play not only for the audience but for the actors as well because they acting needs to be a naturalistic as possible I think Strindberg did this to make the audience and actors to use their sense, Miss Julie use a lot of questions when Miss Julie asked Kristen to run away with herself and Jean Youve never been abroad. Never seen the world. Its lovely, riding in a train shows that Miss Julie is going through too many emotions to start a new life with the servants. Dialect is used to show the audience each character the way they speak if its formal or slang in this play focuses on high and low classes so it must be formal Vous voulez plaisanter, madame. Jean character shows that he is well educated for a servant and impresses Miss Julie that he can speak another language. If I was Miss Julie my dialect will be traditional English accent because this play is really in the olden times where women wear dresses and men wear suits also for servants wear uniform. Kristin I think she speaks formal since she is a servant and have respect for Miss Julie. Strindberg thinks that the play should be continuous, so the story flows straight through because by having breaks it ruins the show and the audience wont understand the message of the play sometimes many wont understand what the play is about. One of my practical I did a part of the play where Kristen found out that Jean and Miss Julie had an affair, I was Kristen and when I played the scene I had to think proper way to say while Im acting because there are so many ways to explore the language thats why language is so important. For my part as Kristin I was kind of using formal language there was no slang but also I was angry at the same time at Jean. I have to think about the tone of voice if Im speaking formal and angrily at Jean and its really difficult seeing that this play is a naturalistic play.

The Structure of the United Nations Essay The structure of the United Nations is based around its charter. The charter of the UN defines six main organs of the new world body, each with specific tasks and functions. The six main organs are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Trusteeship Council, the Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice and the Secretariat. The General Assembly has the right to discuss, debate, and make recommendations on a range of subjects pertaining to international peace and security, including human rights, international law, and peaceful arbitration between disputing nations. General Assembly is the only part of the United Nations that represents all 193 member states, each of which has one vote. Votes taken on important issues require a two-thirds majority of Member States. The General Assembly may elect the nonpermanent members of the Security Council and other bodies such as the Human Rights Council. The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It can recommend the use of a blockade or other financial impositions for any nation that is deemed as breaking international law. If these do not work, then the Security Council can call on the United Nations to use military force to enforce its will. The Security Council is made up of 15 member states, consisting of five permanent members and ten non-permanent members. The permanent five are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The remaining Security Council members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. Each member of the Security Council is given one vote and the votes of nine members are needed for action to be taken. All five permanent members have to agree with the course of action, which is called the veto power. The main task of the Economic and Social Council is to promote and improve the economic and social well-being of those living in the member states. This council deals with human rights and seeks to develop a greater understanding of cultures throughout the world. It basically covers the health, education, economic, social and cultural issues and the promotion of the position of women in the world. Economic and Social Council also consults with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), thereby maintaining a vital link between the United Nations and civil society. Interpersonal Skills Essay

Interpersonal skills are very important to have and develop in life, they are the foundation to the relationships we make throughout our existence. We are interacting with people on a daily basis, even if for a brief moment in time and, those interpersonal skills are the tools we need to make those interactions as positive and effective as possible. This is especially true with our workplace interactions. Throughout our work experience, we will constantly collaborate and interact with others on all aspects of work in order to get the job done. There are many different dimensions of interpersonal skills that include verbal and non-verbal communication, effectively delivering feedback and being open to accepting constructive criticism, efficiently dealing with disagreements, and understanding how technology has an effect on theseskills in the workplace. By understanding these types of interpersonal skills we can more positively influence and support each other, create an encouraging work environment and collectively work together to thrive in our employment. These interpersonal skills will determine our degree of success in the workplace. Furthermore, the absence of these interpersonal skills will hinder our other talents and knowledge and result in a dysfunctional work environment. Interpersonal Skills When thinking of a person we like to be around, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons why we enjoy their company. A common reason is that they are good communicators. It’s easy to talk to them, they relate well to you, they have a positive attitude and are generally pleasant to be around. Similarly, we all know someone who has difficulty communicating with others. Maybe it’s your coworker, a longtime friend, the clerk at your favorite store or a family member. Everyone is different and interpersonal communication skills vary depending on how well they are in tune with themselves and others. Interpersonal communication is simply the way people communicate with each other (Interpersonal Skills, 2013). Whether interactions are of a social or professional nature, having good interpersonal skills will improve those interactions. The messages sent to others while communicating are both verbal and nonverbal (Adler, 2010). The words being spoken, the listener’s perception of their meaning, the body language of the communicators involved and the environment where the communication is happening are factors of interpersonal communication (Adler, 2010). With all of these moving parts it’s easy for misunderstandings to occur. Often times there is a disconnection between what a speaker actuslly says, what the speaker intended to say and the meaning the listener applies to what the speaker said (Adler, 2010). Linguistic theorists C. K. Ogdfen and I. A. Richards are famous for creating the triangle of meaning. This model shows that there is no direct relationship between an idea, process or other referent and the word (or other symbol) used to represent it. Rather, the pathway to understanding – or misunderstanding – passes through the mind of the sender or receiver. (Adler, 2010, p. 92) Speaking with clarity and removing equivocal terms, or terms with two different, but equally acceptable meanings is one way to mitigate inevitable misunderstandings (Adler, 2010). By eliminating the use of slang in a professional setting and being cognizant of the use of jargon communicators can also help to reduce misunderstandings (Adler, 2010). There is an appropriate place and time for everything and being aware of the audience and how messages will be received can keep verbal messages on a direct path of understanding to the listeners. Nonverbal communication often affects the way information is received more than verbal messages because, as the timeless phrase tells us, it’s not lways what you say, but how you say it that can leave a lasting impression. Nonverbal communication is anything other than the words coming out of your mouth (Adler, 2010). If your boss has a slouched posture and disinterested expression on their face, this may make an employee feel discouraged about bringing forth important concerns. If a colleague is making poor eye contact and constantly checks their watch, this may a message of disinterest to a coworker. People that often encroach upon others’ personal space can find that this affects the attitudes of others towards them. Most times you cannot control if your intended verbal message is received properly, but you can control if you are fidgeting and the amount of focus you are portraying to anyone you communicate with. Verbal and nonverbal communication skills go a long way towards improving overall interpersonal skills. One can improve their interpersonal skills and facilitate optimal communication by developing better networking, team work and leadership qualities (Interpersonal Skills, 2013b). Networking skills are exemplified when an individual is self-confident, communicates effectively and never stops building connections in their personal and professional networks (Interpersonal Skills, 2013b). People with great interpersonal skills can easily act as the ‘go-to’ person in their social circle or professional organization. They can connect the dots for others because they relate well to others and move through various interpersonal environments effortlessly. Collaborating well with others and working towards a common goal illustrates good team work. Individuals with interpersonal prowess cooperate with others to achieve the group’s goals. They value the ideas and contributions of each team member by actively listening and encouraging each and every team member to participate. Strong leadership skills require highly developed interpersonal skills. A leader with confidence, an open mind and who readily gives due praise can motivate others to work harder and achieve more (Adler, 2010). Using one’s expertise to delegate appropriately and mentor those who need it are natural characteristics of a leader (Interpersonal Skills, 2013b). Poise, grace and charisma also play a large part in the impression left after any interpersonal interaction. Those with robust interpersonal communication skills understand not only themselves, but also those around them with a fluid flow of cause and effect.. Dealing with Criticism One cause for communication that relies heavily on interpersonal skills in order to attain a successful outcome is criticism. Dealing with criticism from any aspect can be tricky, if not handled in the right way this kind of conversation can quickly go awry very quickly. While giving and receiving praise is easy and pleasurable to manage, encountering criticism is inevitable. Whether speaking out about a complaint or being the one to receive another’s dissatisfaction, criticism can spread like a wildfire of negative emotion and can result in a workplace climate where people are defensive. With the right tools though, someone can effectively deliver and respond to constructive criticism as well as use that information to develop and grow more. Offering constructive feedback can be more stressful than receiving it, because we know that we may offend others by telling them something they may not want to hear. Anticipating the confrontational nature of the encounter is unnerving, but can be best minimized by having a good attitude, carefully planning the message and being well prepared in the delivery. A good attitude is imperative to fostering development in others, positively influencing work relationships, and most importantly, will also help make others feel more receptive to the constructive feedback you may have. The essence of a more positive attitude is respect†¦that comes from how we construct messages; how we speak and act can be more important that the words themselves, as well as paying close attention not only to what you say but also to your nonverbal behavior, including your vocal tone and facial expression, when expressing yourself. (Adler, 2010) In addition, part of having respect and demonstrating equality for others is showing a genuine concern for them and being honest in communicating, which also gives others a feeling of being valued and appreciated. Planning your constructive feedback content is also essential n making your message most effective, and minimizing a defensive reaction (Adler, 2010). â€Å"Organize your thoughts or the sequence of events that you would like to discuss†¦and might even wish to refer to note card†¦as it ensures you get the information correct and can offer the impression that you have carefully considered your comments† (Garne r, 2006). Your message should define the problem clearly with sufficient detail, stay concise, accurate and on topic. The message should address one topic so as to not overwhelm the receiver and potentially cause the individual to become defensive. A good idea, would be to include any ways in which the recipient will benefit from heeding your feedback. When receiving criticism, a respondent will be more accepting if their strengths and positive actions are acknowledged. Finally, the delivery of your feedback should be in a way that is most conducive to convincing the receiving individual. The use of descriptive statements, or â€Å"I† language, refocuses evaluative statements on the speaker instead of judging the other person because they clearly state the reason for bringing up the matter as well as the speaker’s feelings (Adler, 2010). Avoid using â€Å"you† statements that can very easily make the situation take a turn for the worse by making the individual defensive. Pay close attention to your nonverbal communication, so as to avoid demeaning the other person, such as speaking loudly, sounding condescending or pointing your finger (Adler, 2010). Finally when giving constructive feedback, it’s most important to deliver your criticism privately (Adler, 2010). There is nothing worse than feeling embarrassed and belittled, because you feel like you’re being scolded in front of others. Reacting in defense is very easy to come by when you’re on the receiving end of constructive criticism. â€Å"Receiving criticism can actually trigger the flight-or-fight response†¦feeling the desire to withdraw (flight) or retaliate (fight)† (Garner, 2006). Luckily, there are many strategies that can be implemented to help in listening non-defensively and might leave you more open to the feedback. Some strategies include recognizing your body’s physical response to criticism-prone situations, keeping an open mind, recognizing there may be truth in the criticism, and viewing it as an opportunity for personal growth. As you realize that you are being criticized you may feel your heart race a bit, your blood pressure rise, your mouth become a bit dry, and your skin temperature may change†¦however, it may be best to simply realize that these are somewhat instinctual responses and succumbing to them may not best serve your long-term goals† (Garner, 20 06). We learn something new every day from the people around us, especially in the workplace where there are a wide range of skills and knowledge spanning different departments (Adler, 2010). By keeping an open mind and listening thoughtfully, you may learn something useful. While it can be hard to listen sincerely when being criticized, asking for examples or clarification, paraphrasing and even keeping notes of your critic’s comments can give you something to do besides defend yourself†¦and will show your critic that you take his or her comments seriously† (Adler, 2010). Doing these things, they may allow you to be more open to recognizing there might be some validity in your critic’s feedback, especially if this is an opinion others may share. You must avoid excuses, rationalizations and blaming others so as to deviate from the situation. Being honest with yourself is most important and taking the opportunity to develop and grow will benefit you in the long run. It is both the critic and the recipient’s responsibility to work together as a team to focus on finding a cooperative solution that meets everyone’s needs. â€Å"The goal of critical communication is to ensure that there is a dialogue†¦important information may be missed that might help better assess the particulars of the situation† (Garner, 2006). Both party’s perspective should be heard with respect and with as much of a non-judgmental attitude as possible. New information can potentially be uncovered that may influence one’s view of the circumstances, that would otherwise remain undisclosed if the other’s case is not fully heard. Finding someone to place fault on is counterproductive and will not work for satisfying both individuals. A more gainful approach is focusing on finding an effective solution is most beneficial to everyone involved (Adler, 2010). The goal is not to have a winner and loser, but to have a mutual understanding about the topic and how things can change for the better (Garner, 2006).

Marriage and Ancient Greek Culture

Marriage is when a man and a woman are religiously committed to each other. In ancient Greek culture, this reflected on the relationship of the King and Queen, and Odysseus and Penelope, but they weren’t quite similar. The King and Queen had a closer relationship, while Odysseus and Penelope were always separated. Odysseus and Penelope’s marriage was nothing like the King and Queens. Odysseus wasn’t really faithful while trying to get back to his wife. For example, the first time Odysseus wasn’t faithful was when he was captured by Calypso. In The Odyssey, it said â€Å"Even as he spoke, the sun set and the darkness swept the earth. And now, withdrawing into the cavern’s deep recesses, long in each other’s arms they lost themselves in love†. That basically says that they had a sexual relationship. This wasn’t really good of Odysseus due to the fact that he’s married. On the other hand, Penelope is at home waiting for him, and making up excuses that she will marry someone new. To make the other people believe that she unsows her quilt to take longer. The better relationship is between the King and Queen. Unlike Penelope and Odysseus, they live together. In The Odyssey, they said â€Å"Alcinous slept in chambers deep in his loft house where the queen his wife arranged and share their bed. † That showed that they didn’t sleep in different beds, but that they slept together and shared it. The King and Queen are an example of what marriage should be like. Men and woman play different roles. In The Odyssey, there are different roles. For example, woman had to be seen with their husband and not any other man, because then they would be called a bad name. Also, men shouldn’t change in front of other woman while he’s married because it doesn’t show respect for their self and their wife. Ancient Greek culture had many rules, and they were better if you followed them. Marriage and courtship is very important to Greek culture. Not everyone takes it serious, for instance, Odysseus. He wasn’t faithful, and showed he doesn’t care for his wife back home. The King shows he’s very loving to his wife because they live together. Not all marriages are the same, and not everyone takes it as a commitment.

The French word it came from was the Latin verb debitum that gives us the word debt, â€Å"that which is owed.† As a noun, either singular or plural, due can mean â€Å"that which is owing.† One can pay one’s dues literally, as to a club, or figuratively, in the sense of working to get ahead in a profession, as in the headline â€Å"Ricky Gervais and David Chang Have Paid Their Dues.† The expression â€Å"to give a man his due,† means â€Å"to acknowledge a person’s merits, to do justice to a person.† The expression â€Å"to give the Devil his due,† means to give justice to a person for his merits even if he’s otherwise despicable, or if you don’t like him. As an adjective, due means â€Å"payable as a debt.† For example, â€Å"The mortgage payment is due tomorrow.† An expression that has been in the language since Chaucer’s day is â€Å"in due time† in the sense of â€Å"when sufficient time has passed†: â€Å"In due time everyone will know what happened.† Owe, in the sense of â€Å"possess† or â€Å"own† comes from a Germanic source. In some English dialects the word retains the meaning of ownership, but in standard English, the meaning has gone from the sense of â€Å"to possess† to that of â€Å"to be obliged to pay†; â€Å"Don’t forget the twenty dollars you owe me.† A similar word of Germanic origin that does retain the meaning of possession in modern English is own. As a verb, own means â€Å"to possess†: â€Å"He owns the bakery.† As an adjective, it follows a noun or pronoun: â€Å"Alfred’s own son was taken hostage.† As a pronoun, it follows a possessive: â€Å"The boy was given a horse of his own.† No doubt this discussion of due and owe will put some readers in mind of the debate that often arises regarding the proper distinction between the phrases â€Å"due to† and â€Å"owing to.† Refresher: Those who argue for a distinction between â€Å"due to† and â€Å"owing to† insist that â€Å"due to† is an adjective and â€Å"owing to† is adverbial. According to this position, it’s all right to say â€Å"He was late owing to an accident,† because â€Å"owing to an accident† tells why. â€Å"Due to† must be attached to a noun: â€Å"An accident due to carelessness made him late.† As far as general usage is concerned, the debate has become as futile as tussles over ending sentences with prepositions or splitting infinitives. According to the Penguin Writer’s Manual, not even grammarians can give a grammatical reason for insisting on the distinction: Most modern authorities recommend that the rule should be remembered, while acknowledging that its grammatical basis is shaky (there is no reason why â€Å"due to† should not be seen as a compound preposition if â€Å"owing to† is one) and that â€Å"due to† is so frequently used in the sense of â€Å"because of† that many modern dictionaries show it with that sense. The â€Å"due to/owing to† distinction is one of those things that people who feel strongly about it should observe without berating others for ignoring it. Size Reduction and Screening Essay Size reduction and screening The purpose of this experiment was to determine the affect of vibration rate and time on the size reduction and size separation of particles. The objective was successfully completed and the initial sample of soil was separated by vibration into finer particles with a large amount passing through the smallest diameter screen which was 0. 0278 inches producing a final product of fine soil particles which are now easier to transport and store. As can be seen from the graph below (figure 1) undersize particles verses screens, all three different vibration settings (45%, 65%, 85%) produced similar results for the screening process. At the beginning of the experiment (time zero) all of the soil sample was placed on the first screen, number 5, and after repeated screening (vibrating) the sample was broken down in more uniform sizes leaving larger pieces of soil left on the screen while smaller sizes fell through finally producing a fine powder left in the bottom pan. As can be seen from the graph below, after six minutes (the fourth bullet point on graph each bullet point represents two minutes of vibrating) the soil had mostly been sorted into its final sizes. This occurred for all three different vibration settings indicating that after a certain time period, six minutes for this particular experiment, the screening process is 90% complete and may be more cost effective to stop the process as only a small percentage is then sorted into smaller sizes. It can be seen though, that after a few minutes of screening, the original soil sample was sorted into a much more manageable sample making storage and transportation much easier. With regards to retained soil over time, again all three percentage settings produced similar results. The pan weight increased over time as more soil was broken down and this was to be expected as this is the purpose of this particular procedure. Screen 5 and 12, with the larger diameter holes contained the larger, unbreakable soil samples slowly decreased in soil being retained until only the large unbreakable matter was left. All the screens, screen number 14, 16, 20 and 25 kept a rough constant weight indicating that a certain percentage could be broken down and pass through the screens while the rest had reached its optimum broken down size. The higher vibration setting, 65% and 85% had more constant weight and this was due to the sample being vibrated at a higher setting and being broken quicker and thus settling. To conclude, from this small scale experiment alone it can be seen that size reduction and screening is a very useful and effective procedure in reducing the size of a sample making transportation cheaper and easier and taking up less storage space and in a world of cutting costs, this procedure has become vital to a number of different industries

Liberty, Value, and the Liberal Perspective ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the nature of liberty from the point of view of value. Liberty is the highest value for liberals. The root of this liberal view is their particular conception of self. Rawls says 'the self is prior to the ends which are affirmed by it.' This is also the Kantian view of the self: the self is prior to its socially given roles and relationships. Therefore, no end is exempt from possible revision by the self. There is nothing wrong with this basic idea. In fact, all theories agree on free choice of life plan or self-determination. But they disagree about what package of rights and resources best enables people to pursue their own conceptions of the good. However, the liberal view of liberty is based on a metaphysically reasoned idealism. This results in a conception of liberty that is absolute, supreme, and has infinite value compared with other things. Communitarians have several arguments against the liberal view. I consider the following two points to be of utmost import: (1) The liberal view of the self is empty; (2) The liberal view ignores our embeddedness in communal practices. My reasoning is not exactly that of the communitarians. I view 'emptiness' as freedom associated with the substance of an action, which has a value that does not lie in itself. I. Dance With Wolf

There is a saying that the history Is written by the winner. The second one was, somewhat more personal thought. I was relating myself to John Dunbar, and the Sioux. I was too, a foreigner In foreign country. Alien from their culture and customs, I too had to adjust into their society, and become one of them. And that was not easy. Still today, many people from different background live together, but at the same time form their own community. Difference In culture, language, and customs creates confusion In one's realization of identity.Before moving on to the first question, I would like to discuss about â€Å"White Man's Burden†. White men thought they had a mission to converge all the â€Å"savages† to Christian beliefs, and to â€Å"civilize† them. As mentioned In another film we watched during the class, Pocahontas, that movie raises question on â€Å"who is savage? â€Å". A point would like to focus on before I begin my thoughts on the movie, I would lik e to view different points of views. The question of â€Å"virtuous† comes from what point you look at. Looking at different side, my enemy can become an angel to another person.The first question, which side is virtuous? Once, a famous comedian, George Carline said in his stand-up comedy show, â€Å"we are praying to the god to defeat our enemies, and they are praying to the god to defeat their enemies, so somebody's goanna get bucked, mint it? â€Å". Most people when they see this movie will think how cruel white men are. They ravaged lands that Indians lived in, butchered their buffalos, and killed Indians without questioning their human nature, or what kind of person they are. In the other hand, Indians, to the white man, are Just obstacles In the way to their plan.People usually call people in their way to the goal, enemies. The question of â€Å"who is righteous? † can be vague according to which side of point of view you look from. What was impressive of the movie was the scene of the childhood of Rise with Fist. She was born white, and their parents Just wanted to protect her. However, the Native Americans killed their parents, without questioning, In a brutal manner. Who is evil then? Her parents who failed in the task of protecting her family by threatening 1 OFF perhaps what the director wanted to show was the brutality of human being itself.I see form of art as â€Å"expression of human being†. Human being itself is so complex, that there are so many different types of people, characteristics, culture, and modes of behavior. I think what the director wanted to show was, how people think other people are identical to them. If they do not find similarity between them, they turn into hostile behaviors. Sioux did, at the first time with John Dunbar. So as John Dunbar, did not trust in them when they kept on trying to steal his horse. To Sioux, both white man and Pawned tribe are the same.They are both hazardous people who want t hem dead. To white Americans at the end of the movie, both Pawned, Sioux, are all the same. They are Just an obstacle to their moving frontier. When taken into more personal name, it makes us realize, disregarding what tribe we are from, we are all same. We laugh when it's fun; we cry to the death of close one, we feel friendship and comradeship when fighting shoulder to shoulder against creeping death. However, we can never deny what we come from. Perhaps this is why the resonating echo of Wind in his Hair sounded so sad.Dances With Wolves, I am Wind in His Hair. Do you see that I am your friend? Can you see that you will always be my friend? † Without answering to his roar, Dance With Wolves, or John Dunbar rides away to the piled snowy mountain. What this implies, no matter where we come from, we can be friends, but at the same time, it is so hard to stray apart from what you really are. The second point which I found interesting relates more to my personal experiences. I m oved abroad when I was 10 years old. It is an age hard to tell who really I am.I was arced into different culture when I was at school, and I was forced to Korean culture when I came home, back from the school. It is hard to deny what we are used to. The concept is so different, starting from living, eating, greeting, to the way of funeral. John Dunbar, when he was caught by his fellow soldiers towards the end of the movie, denied himself of being John Dunbar, declaring himself as â€Å"l am Dance With Wolves†. He totally seemed to become part of Sioux tribe. However, what was ironic was that the reason he went back to the camp at the first place was to find his urinal.Was Journal so important? Especially thinking about Indian culture where they don't have the concept of individual ownership? Furthermore, if John Dunbar decided to live with their tribe for the rest of his life, what importance of meaning that Journal could possibly hold? I think this part of irony shows how h ard it is to forget your own culture. This also relates to the conclusion of the first point of this essay. I spent most of my adolescent overseas. When I had about 17 to 18 years, I too was confused who I was. Am I Korean? Or am I biologically Korean with American Houghton?I still today, don't think myself as I am one-hundred percent Korean. John Dunbar probably had the same kind of confusion. After his attempt of killing himself, decision of Journey to find himself. He thought he had become part of the Sioux. He learned their language, became friend with them. He hated how white people acted in the war, and he was tired of it. That's why he decided to head west. However, indeed, he never became a true Indian, and he did not wanted to be a regular white man neither; the clash of his two identities must have been very hard on him.It was very interesting in the film how his agony of two clashing identity had effect on John Dunbar. I looked at the film on two different but similar top ics: nature of human being and individual's thought of his identity. I think, every human is same, but different. We all dream, and we all have different identity. Identity can be a key factor what describes oneself. John Dunbar identity is John Dunbar, Lieutenant of The United States' Union Army. He is an officer and the officer in charge of Fort Sedgwick. His identity is Dance With Wolves.He is a husband of Rise With Fist, and a part of Sioux member. He fought against Pawned to defend his tribe. He is an excellent marksman. He used his gun to save a Sioux girl's life from buffalo. He has a Sioux wife. Her name is Rise With Fist, blessed with a name Christine on her birth. Despite the fact that they were brought up in different culture, and different background, they became friends, enemies, husbands and wives. However, they did not truly become one. Which is I thought of as ironic message of the film. The United States is known to be a culture of â€Å"Melting Pot†.However, Native Americans are not part of this melting pot. The United States is also sarcastically said to be a â€Å"salad bowl of different ethnicities†. In the melting pot, all ingredients melt into one singular identity. However in a salad bowl, even though they are mixed together, each ingredient remains their identity. This might be the message what the director of the film Dances With Wolves wanted to say. Not sad, not frightening, nor ugly, Just a self-portrait of the world we live in, a world where we are so close but so far away from each other.

Graduate study plan Essay

I currently poses an undergraduate degree in Health Care Administration, from Sacramento State University. My current career is within the Health Care field at Kaiser Permanente hospital Health Connect Department in Pleasanton, California. This is the regional department for, electronic medical records. I manage projects for system upgrades, and any technical issues that require a fix. I have worked for Kaiser Permanente for five years and wish to succeed at a higher level within the organization. In this paper I will give an insight into my reasons for pursuing my graduate degree, and strategies I will use for personal success and achievement. I have managed always to accomplish both personal and professional goals that I set. It is important to have a goal, whether personal or professional that one is striving to accomplish, so they are motivated to work harder. My short-term personal goal is completing my Master’s Degree. A few personal long-term goals, are to have an open mind to change, effective time management, and continuing to grow as an individual and Mother. A long-term goal in my professional career is becoming a manager or director within Kaiser Permanente or another organization. In lieu of the professional job opportunities and accomplishments, confidence, and knowledge is a professional area I am striving to gain more of, which is a main reason for advancing my education to the graduate level. Obtaining a Master’s Degree will permit expansion in knowledge and skills within area’s I did not advance at the undergraduate level. I am pursuing my degree, to grow as an individual and in my professional career, this degree will expand my skills, knowledge, and confidence to perform at a higher level. Pursuing a degree will open job opportunities, and a higher pay scale. Setting goals is the easy part, but achieving them is the hard part. Challenges will arise and everyday life may interfere. Three challenges I face in meeting both short and long-term goals, is lack of time, personal life distractions, and control in advancing professionally. I have to focus on incorporating better time management and stress management into my every day schedule, so lack of time is not an issue. Personal life distractions, include a Forty-hour work week and commute, my fourth month old baby girl, and leisure activities. What I have learned is to plan out a time each day for these activities. It helps manage my time and stress, by keeping track of all activities and obligations on a calendar. If I have a written schedule that I visually can see, I stay focused. Finding a good balance in life is what keeps me moving forward and accomplishing my goals. One may not always have complete control in accomplishing goals one may have for themselves, an example is my goal to achieve at a higher level professionally. Sure I can have an abundance of knowledge and work hard every day, but in the end it will be the hirer who determines if I am a good fit for the position. Competition in the job industry is at its all-around high, but the key to success is, never give up. Graduating with a Master’s Degree is a milestone in achieving my short-term goal, and advancing professionally in a new career as well as showing confidence, by performing at a higher level is a long-term milestone that will mark my achievement in the goals I have set. I believe effective communication is an essential factor in overcoming differences and creating an environment that people can come together to learn, work, or play. Communication on the surface seems straight forward, but I am guilty of a weaknesses related to how I communicate, which includes relating to the audiences age or gender when communicating. In practice, it is troubled with multiple issues dependent on the parties involved, who convey, and receive messages. A couple of questions that one can ask to improve communication, are, â€Å"Is it possible to convey a message and have it received as the speaker intended? What happens between the voicing of a message and the hearing of a message? Under what conditions does accurate communication occur? Do our own mental models affect interactions with others? What can leaders do to create the conditions for clear  communication?† (â€Å"Creating the Conditions for Effective Communication and Learning in Organizations,† 2008, p. 11). These are numerous examples of questions one should ask themselves, and I will use these examples of what I can ask myself to improve my method of communication. A challenge between faculty and students is to communicate as clearly as possible to ensure students receive the information they need. Given this, I have also noticed how often miscommunication happens between staff and their students. In the journal article titled, â€Å"Creating the Conditions for Effective Communication and Learning in Organization,† it was stated that traditional communication strategies, such as paraphrasing to ensure a faculty member understands a student and asking him or her to articulate back their understanding of what was said. It was observed that no matter how skilled the speaker, there are still many interpretations by the receiver (Scott, 2008). Three strategies I will practice as a communicator are, ask myself questions that may benefit how effective my communication is before communicating to a specific audience, have the audience restate how they understood my statement or question and be as detailed as possible so my information is not misconstrued. Regarding my stronger aspects of communicating, I am clear and concise, an experienced public speaker, and able to communicate effectively in a business environment. Communication is one of the main planks on which organizational success rests in today’s tough business environment. As a result effective communication skills have become essential to enable professionals to achieve the exact levels of performance demanded by them. Apart from the practical aspects if one has a grasp on basic concepts of communication, it can further assist professionals to communicate skillfully and persuasively (Rai & Rai, 2002). Suggesting that the saying â€Å"It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it† rings true for effective communication. Possessing the quality of effective communication heads toward a high quality leader because it enables one to express ideas successfully (Rolle, 2002). Effective time management, reasonable goals, overcoming obstacles, and  effective communication will lead to success in acquiring a graduate degree. If one strives to succeed and manages their time efficiently, this is easily obtainable. Re-evaluating my goals and strategies to overcome obstacles, and analyzing my communication level, has already advanced me closer to success.
